Dengue fever is an emerging public health concern in the city of Multan, Pakistan: its seroprevalence and associated risk factors

Abstract: The prevalence of dengue IgG and IgM antibodies was investigated in 689 patients with suspected dengue. Of the 689 suspected cases, 373 (54.1%) were found to be positive for dengue antibodies, IgM being dominant. There was a significant relationship between incidence of dengue fever and season: all cases were reported during the rainy season, especially the post-monsoon season (89.5%), with none during the dry season. More male (79.3%) than female individuals were positive cases and the incidence was highest i… Show more

“…We found the sero-prevalence of DENV IgM among febrile patients is higher (45%) than IgG (4.2%). The results are in agreement with findings described in Tanzania [15], Kenya [16], Eastern India [17], Brazil [18], Singapore [19], and Southern Pakistan [12], where DENV IgG was reported to be between 4.5% to 12%. In contrast, the prevalence of anti-DENV IgG seropositivity in the present study was lower than the rates in South Ethiopia [20], Djibouti [21], and the northern province of Sudan [22], where it was reported to be between 20-24%.…”

“…However, fewer cases were noted in dry months also, illustrating that despite an epidemic profile, transmission persists in Sheikhupura in wet and dry seasons. There was also a significant correlation between DENV and environmental factors such as rainfall, temperature, and humidity, which is consistent with the conclusion in Myanmar [24], Brazil [18], Venezuela [25], India [17], China [26], Nepal [27], and Pakistan [12].…”

“…The data are so varied that a difference is even found within a specific city, one example being Singapore. 51,[53][54][55][56][57][58] The literature does not support that greater incidence in children and male individuals is a defined characteristic of dengue. Such contrast demonstrates the importance of local factors that might contribute greater to disease incidence, such as transmission intensity, local herd immunity, and temporal patterns.…”
