Denitrification during composting: Biochemistry, implication and perspective

Aerobic denitrification is considered as a promising biological method to eliminate the nitrate contaminants in waterbodies. However, the molecular mechanism of this process varies in different functional bacteria. In this study, the nitrogen removal characteristics for a newly isolated aerobic denitrifier Bacillus subtilis JD-014 were investigated, and the potential functional genes involved in the aerobic denitrification process were further screened through transcriptome analysis. JD-014 exhibited efficient denitrification performance when having sodium succinate as the carbon source with the range of nitrate concentration between 50 and 300 mg/L. Following the transcriptome data, most of the up-regulated differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were associated with cell motility, carbohydrate metabolism, and energy metabolism. Moreover, gene nirsir annotated as sulfite reductase was screened out and further identified as a regulator participating in the nitrogen removal process within JD-014. The findings in present study provide meaningful information in terms of a comprehensive understanding of genetic regulation of nitrogen metabolism, especially for Bacillus strains.

A review on application of external carbon sources for denitrification for wastewater treatment

<p>With the increase in industrial and agricultural activities, huge amount of wastewater containing nitrogen is produced. Biological denitrification is currently the most widely used, sustainable and cost-effective process to remove nitrogen from wastewater. In biological denitrification, application of external carbon sources for denitrification is important because it is the way to boost the denitrification process and it is necessary for wastewater treatment plants that have to meet very stringent effluent nitrogen limits. This review study focused with treatment of wastewater using biological denitrification as advantages. This also deals with advantages of different external carbon sources with emphasis on biological denitrification as the cost of biological denitrification is controlled by the carbon source because the cost of biological denitrification is controlled by the carbon source.. Hence, use of alternative carbon sources such as agricultural wastes, and food waste is reviewed in this paper. This study recommend other waste material such as textile waste can be a part of denitrification because carbon source such as methanol, ethanol and acetic acid/acetate can be recovered from textile waste.</p>

Systematic review: External carbon source for biological denitrification for wastewater

Nitrogen mitigation is serious environmental issue around the globe. Several methods for wastewater treatment have been introduced, but biological denitrification has been recommended, particularly with addition of the best external carbon source. The key sites of denitrification are wetlands; it can be carried out with different methods. To highlight the aforementioned technology, this paper deals to review the literature to evaluate biological denitrification and to demonstrate cost effective external carbon sources. The results of systematic review disclose the denitrification process and addition of different external carbon sources. The online literature exploration was accomplished using the most well‐known databases, that is, science direct and the web of science database, resulting 625 review articles and 3084 research articles, published in peer‐reviewed journals between 2015 and 2021 were identified in first process. After doing an in‐depth literature survey and exclusion criteria, we started to shape the review from selected review and research articles. A number of studies confirmed that both nitrification and denitrification are significant for biological treatment of wastewater. The studies proved that the carbon source is the main contributor and is a booster for the denitrification. Based on the literature reviewed it is concluded that biological denitrification with addition of external carbon source is cost effective and best option in nitrogen mitigation in a changing world. Our study recommends textile waste for recovery of carbon source.
