Dentigerous cyst associated with an ectopic third molar in the maxillary sinus: A case report and review of literature

Abstract: Dentigerous cysts are the most common type of developmental odontogenic cysts arising from the crowns of impacted, embedded, or unerupted teeth. They constitute about 20% of all epithelium-lined cysts of the jaws. The teeth involved most often are mandibular third molar and maxillary canines. About 70% of dentigerous cysts occur in the mandible and 30% in the maxilla. Dentigerous cysts associated with ectopic teeth within the maxillary sinus are fairly rare, and only 20 cases had been reported in Medline since… Show more

“…When looking at studies and recommendations for the treatment of impacted lower wisdom teeth, such marked migrations within short time frames are extremely rare. When these migrations occur, they are often accompanied by the development of cysts both in the mandible and the maxilla, where teeth can then be displaced into the maxillary sinus. In this case, the most likely trigger for the migration is the further root growth (compare Figs.…”

“…The traditional approach is Caldwell-Luc procedure, which allows a direct view into the maxillary sinus [12]. This approach was employed in this case which allowed direct access to the tooth as well as meticulous antral irrigation.…”

“…The literal meaning of dentigerous is "tooth bearing". 5 One of the theories that explain the pathogeneses of this cyst is the accumulation of fluid between the unerupted tooth and the reduced enamel epithelium. The incidence of DC is two times more in males than females, where 70% occurs in the mandible and 30% in the maxilla.…”

“…The incidence of DC is two times more in males than females, where 70% occurs in the mandible and 30% in the maxilla. 5 Although a DC may be associated with any unerupted tooth but the mandibular third molar and maxillary canine are the most involved followed by mandibular premolar and maxillary third molar. 5 Dentigerous cyst is discovered by routine radiographs or when radiographs are taken to investigate the failure of a tooth eruption, a missing tooth or misalignment.…”
