Denture Acrylic Resin Material with Antibacterial and Protein-Repelling Properties for the Prevention of Denture Stomatitis

Abstract: Denture stomatitis is a multifactorial pathological condition of the oral mucosa that affects up to 72% of denture wearers. It is commonly seen on the palatal mucosa and characterized by erythema on the oral mucosa that are in contact with the denture surface. The aim of this study was to incorporate 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and dimethylaminohexadecyl methacrylate (DMAHDM) into a high impact polymethylmethacrylate heat-cured denture base acrylic resin as a potential treatment for denture … Show more

“…This dual incorporation of MPC and DMAHDM reduced Candida albicans biofilm colony-forming unit by two orders of magnitude. Although the addition of MPC and DMAHDM alone or in combination significantly reduced the flexural strength of the material, they showed reduced roughness values when compared to control groups ( Figure 3 ) [ 35 ].…”

Polymers 2022, 14, x FOR PEER REVIEW 5 of 12 addition of ZrO2NPs significantly reduced the adhesion of the biofilm to repaired and cold-cured acrylic resin and had a significant antifungal effect [33].…”

“…One of the existing strategies to modify acrylic materials and form bioactive materials is the addition of various types of nanomaterials such as silver and titanium oxide 7 10 . Another strategy is the addition of various types of medicinal substances, such as antibiotics 11 and chlorhexidine 12 , 13 . In addition to these approaches, the use of different types of bioactive glasses can also enable the modification of acrylic materials.…”

“…The last phase is dispersion: the release of more virulent Candida cells from the biofilm into the surrounding environment. It has been noted that for patients who use removable prosthetic restorations, it is necessary to repair or replace a restoration made of acrylic after C. albicans infection [ 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 ]. The question is still unclear whether similar procedures should be performed for composite fillings and filled root canals.…”
