Depression After First Hospital Admission for Acute Coronary Syndrome: A Study of Time of Onset and Impact on Survival

Abstract: We examined incidence of depression after acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and whether the timing of depression onset influenced survival. All first-time hospitalizations for ACS (n = 97,793) identified in the Danish Patient Registry during 2001-2009 and a reference population were followed for depression and mortality via linkage to patient, prescription, and cause-of-death registries until the end of 2012. Incidence of depression (as defined by hospital discharge or antidepressant medication use) and the relati… Show more

“…Considering other clinical variables (i.e. baseline and cumulative scores at depression and anxiety) only age and incident depression were risk factors for the development of MACE, agreeing with the suggestion that incident depression (Keegan, Conroy, & Doyle, 2016;May et al, 2017) has a cardio-toxic effect, particularly in the year following an ACS (Osler et al, 2016). We found no dose-response relationship (Brunner et al, 2014).…”

“…Penelitian yang dilakukan Osler, dkk. 5 di Denmark, melihat onset dari depresi dalam 30 hari, satu tahun, dan dua tahun pada 97.793 pasien SKA. Didapatkan data bahwa depresi yang terjadi dalam 30 hari pertama sebanyak 724 pasien, lebih sedikit bila dibandingkan dengan depresi yang terjadi dalam satu tahun sebanyak 4.466 pasien.…”

“…Moreover, 1 in 10 patients with ACS develop depressive symptoms within the following year (Thombs et al, 2006). Depression itself seems to have a negative impact on cardiac prognosis (Lichtman et al, 2014), but the role played by anxiety (de Jager et al, 2018;Ossola et al, 2018), severity of depressive symptoms, and recurrence of the episodes (Osler et al, 2016;Yammine et al, 2017;Zuidersma et al, 2011) is still object for debate.…”
