Derivation of partial pair distribution functions for amorphous FeTb from electron scattering data based on a new concept

Abstract: In this work we present pair distribution functions (PDFs) of amorphous Fe1-xTbx (x=0.1-0.5) with a high spatial resolution better than 0.02 nm obtained from electron diffraction experiments. The short-range order of FeTb alloys with up to 32 at.% Tb content is described quantitatively as an arrangement of the known crystalline FeTb phases with various concentrations and structures by superposing PDFs of these structures in the range of the first and second coordination shell up to 0.6 nm. Partial FeFe, FeTb a… Show more

“…For these structure studies, the diffraction technique with synchrotron, 2,3) electron, 4) and the small angle scattering technique with neutron 5) or X-ray scattering 6) are often used. The former technique is to know the atomic correlation length in MROs and the latter one to know spatial length of density or compositional fluctuations.…”

“…Here, through the way of modifying the Lorch‐window method 14, 15 in PDF analysis to a truncated Lorch‐window, combined with the Cs‐corrected HRTEM image, we have verified the existence of off‐octahedral Ge in c ‐Ge 2 Sb 2 Te 5 and further suggested that these off‐octahedral Ge atoms could be in the tetrahedral positions. These results further demonstrate the significance of signals in high‐ Q space in the structural analysis, especially structural details in the short range order.…”

“…Ripples (below real structural features) arise from the Fourier transform due to the upper limit of the transform range 14–16, 18. These ripples lower the reliability of the shoulder peak at 2.6 Å.…”

“…Standard computer programs for PDFs for neutron and X-ray powder diffraction data are well established (Peterson et al, 2000;Juhá s et al, 2013). A number of efforts have been made to obtain PDFs from electron diffraction (ED) data (Cockayne & McKenzie, 1988;Tewes et al, 1994;Takagi et al, 2001;McBride, 2003;Ankele et al, 2005;Ishimaru et al, 2008;Abeykoon et al, 2012;Mu et al, 2013). However, these have not been sufficient to establish electron powder diffraction as one of the major data sources for PDF analysis.…”
