Deriving a Novel Score Predicting Progression in Early-Onset Scoliosis: A Multicenter Initiative

Abstract: Study Design. This was a retrospective multicenter study. Objective. To develop a novel progression risk stratification scoring system for early-onset scoliosis. Summary of Background Data. There is a lack of investigations into variables affecting the risk of curve progression in early-onset scoliosis, which prevents stratification. A novel risk score system is needed to help in progression risk estimation. Methods. A retrospective analysis was done at three centers, from 1995 to 2020. Scoliosis cases before … Show more

“…Infantile curves that reach 30° tend to continue to worsen without treatment. AlNouri et al [7 ▪▪ ] described a new progression risk score based on the classic categories (age, curve type, curve magnitude, and cause). While this work focuses on conservative and surgical management of the spinal deformity, it is essential to understand the importance of multidisciplinary treatment of these children frequently affected by associated conditions and comorbidities.…”

“…There is a paucity of data in the literature about variables affecting progression risk and rate in early-onset scoliosis, making it challenging to plan and agree on treatment modalities with parents or caretakers, highlighting the need for further studies. The novel risk score is a starting point that certainly needs more work for verification and inclusion of other potential variables of interest 1 …”

“…The novel risk score is a starting point that certainly needs more work for verification and inclusion of other potential variables of interest. 1 Regarding gait or anisomelia, and the question "Is it related to scoliosis progression?" The likely answer is yes to some extent, but evidence continues to be lacking.…”

“…AlNouri et al 1 presented a novel progression risk score for early-onset scoliosis. However, according to the authors, there is still a lack of investigations into variables affecting the risk of curve scoliosis progression.…”
