Deriving the Magnetopause Position from the Soft X‐Ray Image by Using the Tangent Fitting Approach

Abstract: Imaging is one of the essential techniques to observe astronomical structures. While analyzing the observed images, it is a challenge in many scientific fields to reconstruct the 3-D structures from 2-D image(s). This report discusses this challenge in the context of reconstructing the structure of the Earth's magnetosphere from the X-ray image and presents a new technique. Specifically, it finds the optimum match of tangent directions derived from the X-ray image and the parameterized magnetopause function. W… Show more

“…Combining the advantages of TDA and DFA, Sun et al (2020) developed a new method to derive the 3D magnetopause from a single X-ray image. The basic idea is similar to BFA in Jorgensen et al (2019a, b) as introduced above, which compares the information provided by the X-ray image as well as a parameterized magnetospheric system in order to find the best match.…”

“…In the previous work, we demonstrated the lobster-eye model and ray tracing method based on imaging simulation and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model (Peng et al, 2018;Sun et al, 2019Sun et al, , 2020. Here, we use MHD model to simulate dayside magntosheath X-ray intensity distribution (Wang et al, 2013).…”

“…A number of boundary tracing algorithms have been developed and compared in view of their application in the analysis of SXI images returned during SMILE operational phase. These include the tangential direction approach (TDA) of Collier and Connor (2018) and the tangent fitting approach (TFA) of Sun et al (2020). On the basis of the limb brightening effect Collier and Connor assert that the soft X-ray peak direction is tangent to the magnetopause and derive an analytical formula of the magnetopause location as a function of spacecraft location and soft X-ray peak angles.…”
