Dermatoglyphics – a Possible Biomarker in the Neurodevelopmental Model for the Origin of Mental Disorders

Abstract: The contradictory data in the literature on dermatoglyphics in mental disorders suggest the need for further studies on these biological markers in order to identify their place in the neurodevelopmental etiological model of these diseases.

“…The most commonly studied dermatoglyphic indices include finger and palmar ridge counts, palmar atd-angle, ridge patterns on the fingertips, and palmar flexion crease patterns (PFCs). Unusual and atypical dermatoglyphic ridge patterns are often associated with mental disorders such as schizophrenia [ 5 ]. This is unsurprising, given the involvement of the nervous system in the timing and development of dermal ridge patterns [ 6 ].…”

“…It has been found that the most frequently mentioned in articles statistically significant indicators were total finger ridge score and the palmar ridge score on the line connecting the tri-radii a-b [12]. A similar study was conducted by a group of Bulgarian researchers, who also point to the priority importance of the index of the palmar ridge score on the line connecting the tri-radii a-b in this disease [3].…”

“…Currently available literature about palmistry and its scientific application are a result of scientific analysis performed on the palm contours of diseased patients. [14][15][16] In 2011, a study published in International Journal of Morphology associated the chromosomal aberration with pattern of simian and Sydney lines or life line and head line. 4 In support, similar observation with context to palm creases has been made in current study where palmists reported that palms having branching of heart line on the mount of Venus indicate brain disease or brain hemorrhage.…”
