“…To date, four HCP‐delivered support studies involving topically treated patients with psoriasis have been published, 11 , 12 , 13 , 18 all of which have shown positive effects, confirming the general impression by the general public, patients, nurses and physicians that regular personnel contact with a limited number of HCPs promotes better treatment outcomes. 21 , 22 Consequently, healthcare quality may be compromised by measures that reduce access to dedicated staff who have capacity to deliver support based on the patient's priorities.…”

“… 18 We randomly allocated patients in the intervention group to one of three dermatological nurses 18 . The intervention support was designed based on suggestions obtained from focus group studies of patients with psoriasis 21 and dermatological nurses 22,23 . The intervention consisted of a structured interview guide, ensuring that the patients had a reminder system, 24,25 holding patients accountable for following their treatment plans, 26–29 providing support, 30 building trust in the treatment and healthcare professional (HCP), 13,31,32 and increasing the patients' interest in the treatment via favourable comparison with other treatment options (Table 2).…”

“…Since dermatologists are a limited resource, the use of dermatology nurses, who are trained to support psoriasis patients in their use of topical drugs, may be a practical solution for improved health outcomes, which can be measured by an objective reduction in the severity of skin disease and may also be reported by patients in patient-reported outcomes (PROs) (in regard to overall health-related quality of life and dermatology-specific quality of life) [ 12 ]. This is supported by clinical trials and focus group studies suggesting that improved support benefits adherence to topical drugs [ 13 15 ]. Improved support from dermatology nurses, with specialist training in supporting psoriasis patients may include [ 1 ] individualizing treatment plans, [ 2 ] providing easy access to dermatology consultation in case of flare-up, and [ 3 ] motivating patients to use the medication.…”

“…These results are reported separately. 14 The study was conducted at a dermatology outpatient clinic at a university hospital. We recruited dermatology nurses and student nurses between the ages of 23 and 58.…”
