Dermoid sinus and spinal malformations in a Yorkshire terrier: Diagnosis and follow‐up

Abstract: An unusual case of a Yorkshire terrier with a dermoid sinus associated with multiple spinal/costal malformations is described. The dog presented with ataxia and pain in the dorsal thoracic region. Diagnostic characterisation of the lesions was obtained with radiography, myelography and computed tomography. After surgical removal of the sinus, the dog showed marked clinical improvement over a two-year period.

“…In rare cases, a dermoid sinus can be associated with vertebral malformations, as in these cases presented here (Selcer and others 1984, Fatone and others 1995, Cornegliani and others 2001, Bowens and others 2005, Colon and others 2007, Tong and Simpson 2009). Spina bifida seems to be related to dermoid sinuses that reach the spinal canal (Fatone and others 1995, Pratt and others 2000, Bowens and others 2005, Colon and others 2007, Tong and Simpson 2009). This may be due to the interaction between neural crest, mesoderm (the embryological origin of the bone tissue) and the neuroectodermal neural tube that is required for normal development of the neuraxis.…”

“…Swedish vallhund is a multi‐purpose dog with short legs and a long body resembling Welsh corgis. Besides the ridgeback and its cross‐breeds, dermoid sinus has been reported in the English springer spaniel (Pratt and others 2000), the rottweiler (Bornard and others 2007), the Yorkshire terrier (Fatone and others 1995), the golden retriever (Cornegliani and others 2001), the boerboel (Penrith and others 1994), the Siberian husky (Cornegliani and Ghibaudo 1999), the shih tzu, the boxer (Selcer and others 1984), the chow chow (Booth 1998), the Great Pyrenees dog (Camacho and others 1995) and a Burmese cat (Tong and Simpson 2009).…”
