Design and Development of 16-kA HTS Current Lead for HMFL 45-T Magnet

Abstract: The High Magnetic Field Laboratory developed a 45-T hybrid magnet. To test this magnet, a new pair of hightemperature superconducting current leads rated at 16 kA were developed. This paper addresses the design and test of those current leads. To minimize heat loads at the cold end, Bi-2223 high-temperature superconductors were used. The foil-type main heat exchanger is cooled by 77-K liquid nitrogen (LN 2 ) and gas nitrogen (GN 2 ). The busbar for International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, an Nb-Ti low… Show more

“…HTS binary current leads were first proposed by Mumford in 1989 [3]. In the past few years, HTS binary current leads have been widely applied, not only in large-scale systems, such as particle accelerators [4][5][6][7] and fusion devices [8][9][10][11][12][13], but also for smaller isolated magnets, such as superconducting magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) magnets [14,15], high-field magnet system [16][17][18][19][20][21] and other special test facilities [22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30]. The typical structure of binary current leads comprises two parts: a hightemperature portion made by a normal conductor and a lowtemperature portion made by an HTS and a normal metal shunt.…”

“…(Bi, Pb) 2 Sr 2 Ca 2 Cu 3 O 10+y (Bi-2223) high temperature superconductor (HTSC) has a great potential for a variety of applications such as power transmission cables [1,2], superconducting magnets [3,4], motors [5,6], generators [7,8], transformers [9,10], current limiters [11,12] and current leads [13,14]. This is because the first generation of the Bi-2223 superconducting tapes can carry a sufficiently high transport critical current density, J c , and can be mass produced with a rather low price compared with the second generation of the superconducting tapes [15].…”
