Design and Development of a Near Isotropic Printed Arc Antenna for Direction of Arrival (DoA) Applications

Abstract: This research presents an easy to fabricate isotropic printed arc antenna element to be used for direction of arrival (DoA) arrays. The proposed antenna exhibits a total gain variation of 0.5 dB over the entire sphere for 40 MHz impedance bandwidth at 1 GHz, which is the best design isotropy reported in literature so far. In addition, the isotropic bandwidth of the antenna for total gain variation of ≤3 dB is 225 MHz with 86% efficiency. The isotropic wire antenna is first designed and simulated in Numerical E… Show more

“…In general, the patch antenna consists of a top layer (fed) and a bottom (ground) layer. The dimensions and shape of near-isotropic arc antenna followed the work by to [1]. As described in the publication, the dimensions of the antenna were adapted to the target frequency of 868 MHz.…”

“…Omnidirectional antennas exhibit a direction-dependent transmission power, whereas isotropic antennas exhibit a direction-independent behavior. Isotropic antennas transmit and receive power in all directions, thus, the final orientation of the antennas has no influence onto transmission range [1]. For IoT applications in outdoor environments, the orientation of the IoT device might be dynamically (e.g., position determination of mobile objects).…”

“…FDA has been receiving increasing attention due to its unique range and angular spatial focusing properties [11][12][13][14]. To optimize the FDA dot-shaped beampattern, rangeangle coupling in the FDA beampattern can be removed by using nonlinear array element spacing to break the periodicity of FDA [15] and by using a logarithmically increasing frequency offset [16].…”
