Design and implementation of a collaborative epidemiological surveillance system for aquaculture (VECA)

Abstract: Syndromic surveillance and participatory epidemiology are nowadays taking part in the public health system because they can be very interesting tools to complement the classical ones. Although syndromic surveillance could be nonspecific, it is usually based on real‐time data analysis to provide early warnings. Participatory Epidemiology can bring us different and interesting approaches that we can use to better understand the problem. VECA implements an epidemiological surveillance system, validated by experts… Show more

“…'Winter disease' is a metabolic syndrome common in captive sea bream during the cold season; it causes gut dilation with undigested food and necrotic-haemorrhagic debris, which can sometimes be lethal. 47,48 Another disease commonly detected in S. aurata is lymphocystis, a self-limiting viral disorder that usually occurs in sites less exposed to the immune system. 49 Non-infectious systemic granulomatosis, found in 40 A. regius in our experiment, is a nutritional disorder that is often detectable in coelomic organs of meagre less than 2 years in age.…”

“…In [4], the project VECA was developed with the goal to improve the surveillance aquaculture system in the Spanish aquaculture sector. The proposed approach aimed at the creation of an interactive and participatory disease surveillance system for aquaculture in Spain and it can identify and characterize diseases laying the groundwork for preventing future diseases that could cause significant economic losses.…”
