Design and Simulation of a Highly Sensitive SPR Optical Fiber Sensor

Abstract: An idea of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) has been utilized for the design of highly sensitive sensors based on the wagon-wheel fiber technology. Such sensors are sensitive to changes in the refractive index of sample analyte. In this study, a three-strut wagon-wheel structure, coated with the gold layer of nano-sized thickness, has been proposed as the SPR sensor. Finite element method is employed to simulate and tune the proposed SPR's design, which leads to a highly sensitive and multichannel plasmonic… Show more

“…With noble metals assembled on the engraved cladding section of the transmission probe, a variety of fiber-optic plasmonic sensors have previously been investigated. These include single-mode fibers (SMFs) [104], multi-mode fibers (MMFs) [105], wagon wheel fibers [106], U-shaped fibers [107,108], D-shaped fibers [109,110], and FBGs [111], among others [112,113].…”

“…Various plasmonic sensors based on fiber-optics have lately been depicted based on the transmission probe, where noble metals were mounted on the etched cladding section, for instance, single-mode fibers (SMFs) [89], multi-mode fibers (MMFs) [90], wagon wheel fibers [91], U-shaped fibers [92,93], D-shaped fibers [94], and Bragg grating fibers [95], among others [96,97]. Biochemical reactions usually result in small RI changes in the ambient medium, and SPR-optic fiber devices are extremely vulnerable to these minor RI variations.…”
