Design and Simulation of Hybrid WDM/TDM Passive Optical Network

Abstract: Due to the expansion of internet and multimedia services, such as Passive Optical Network (PON) come to the forefront of the research field. Network service provider mostly deploy Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) based PON because it is cost effective. The main limitation with TDM-PON is its limited bandwidth. So in order to provide increased bandwidth Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) based PON is used. But the main limitation with WDM-PON is its high cost. Therefore the advantages of TDM-PON and WDM-PON… Show more

“…A WDM-OTDM architecture with increase efficiency and throughput while reducing delays and errors is presented in [1]. V. Lohani and R. S. Prasad [3] studied the performance of the WDM-TDM hybrid system in the presence of an optical amplifier to increase the maximum number of users to 320 users up to 160 km with a data rate of 1.25 Gbit/s. In [4] Amritpal Singh and al.proposed a bidirectional hybrid PON with a downstream signal of 10 Gbit / s and a modulated upstream signal of 5 Gbit / s supporting 8 ONU over a transmission distance of 45 km.…”

“…The three main function units in which PON depends are central office(CO),remote node(RN),optical network unit(ONU).OLT(optical line terminal) is placed on CO which transfer the data from access node to ONU though a RN. The passive components are applied in RN, it does not needed a power [2].…”
