Abstract:Traditional power supply cords have become less important because they prevent large-scale utilization and mobility. In addition, the use of batteries as a substitute for power cords is not an optimal solution because batteries have a short lifetime, thereby increasing the cost, weight, and ecological footprint of the hardware implementation. Their recharging or replacement is impractical and incurs operational costs. Recent progress has allowed electromagnetic wave energy to be transferred from power sources (i.e., transmitters) to destinations (i.e., receivers) wirelessly, the so-called wireless power transfer (WPT) technique. New developments in WPT technique motivate new avenues of research in different applications. Recently, WPT has been used in mobile phones, electric vehicles, medical implants, wireless sensor network, unmanned aerial vehicles, and so on. This review highlights up-to-date studies that are specific to near-field WPT, which include the classification, comparison, and potential applications of these techniques in the real world. In addition, limitations and challenges of these techniques are highlighted at the end of the article.

Design and Analysis of Resonant Wireless Power Transfer System

In this paper, the modelling and analysis of resonant wireless power transfer (RWPT) system are carried out by using circuit theory. Equations of the efficiency and frequency are derived for basic series-series circuit topology and series-parallel-mixed circuit topology. The designed model uses the series-parallel-mixed topology. The model is tested for two different peak-to-peak voltage levels including 20 V and 40 V. The achieved efficiency at 20 V is 49.10% and at 40 V is 49.52% approximately. The modelling is performed by using advanced design system (ADS) high frequency design software. In addition, an overview of currently available wireless power transfer (WPT) technologies and the recent study on inductive wireless power transfer (IWPT) and resonant wireless power transfer (RWPT) systems is also presented.

Omnidirectional inductive wireless charging of a 6×6×6 cm 3 3D receiver cube with 6 planar coils inside a 47×47×47 cm 3 box with 4 planar emitting coils is studied. The power delivered to the cube in the central position of the box is in the 1 W-2.4 W range with 6-7% transfer efficiency. In this position, the power is insensitive to the pitch angular orientation. When moving the 3D receiver cube toward the corners of the box, there is no sudden drop of transmitted power. However, the delivered power near the corners increases or decreases in an acceptable range depending on the orientations of the magnetic field of the emitters. Perspectives of this work, when replacing the manufacturing of coils based on PCBs technology by 3D Molded Interconnect Device technology, are briefly discussed.
