Design, characterization, and clinical evaluation of argan oil nanostructured lipid carriers to improve skin hydration

Abstract: Given its advantages in skin application (eg, hydration, antiaging, and protection), argan oil could be used in both dermatological and cosmetic formulations. Therefore, the preparation of nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) using argan oil as a liquid lipid is a promising technique, since the former constitute well-established systems for dermal delivery. The aim of this work was to develop a topical formulation of argan oil NLCs to improve skin hydration. Firstly an NLC dispersion was developed and characte… Show more

“…Tichota et al formulated argan oil NLC-based hydrogel manifesting a synergistic effect on skin hydration (NLC occlusion plus argan oil hydration). 88 Skin hydration can be measured using a corneometer. The instrument works on the mechanism of measuring capacitance or conductance of a dielectric medium.…”

“…41 Skin microrelief is used to evaluate skin-hydration efficacy of cosmetics, and could be assessed by measuring the parameters of roughness, scaling, smoothing, and wrinkling. 88 The moisturisation effect of a product leads to the increase in skin hydration, which contributes to wrinkle smoothing and enhancing the penetration of bioactives into specific skin layers. 82 Any alteration in the hydration level of the skin are measured in arbitrary units.…”

“…After 14 days of application by rice bran oil nanoemulsions, skin moisture increased by 38% in normal control volunteers and by 30% in patients with atopic dermatitis or psoriasis. Tichota et al 67 used argan oil as liquid lipid to prepare nanostructured lipid carriers and further prepared nanostructured lipid carriers-based hydrogel formulation. The formulation has high stability, firmness and adhesion, and can extend the contact time for topical application.…”

“…This causes the contact time with the skin is short so that the absorption of the active ingredients also decreases and the acceptability is less. 16 The addition of the base will increase the viscosity and contact time on the skin. It will increase skin hydration so that the active ingredients penetrate more easily into the skin.…”
