Abstract

In this panel, we explore four sets of designs with different objectives and audiences. We discuss design approach, design goals, and design results, and how these designs might be different had they employed different design approaches and criteria for success. This panel builds on the Design Expo of CHI2001 to explore approaches to design through the display and discussion of design artifacts. KeywordsDesign, interaction, design method, user experience OVERVIEW OF THE PANEL TOPICDesign has always played a vital role in the field of HCI, yet there are various unexplored assumptions about what "design" is and how it is done. This panel explores perspectives within two "design" communities: the SIGCHI community and the AIGA community. This panel will compare and contrast designs and the processes used to develop them from various perspectives. Our objective is to illustrate multiple methods of approaching the design of interactive systems, and highlight two professional organizations' historical, professional, and cultural differences with respect to design. IssuesWithin the SIGCHI community, designing the user experience may be the responsibility of the software engineer, the interaction designer, the visual designer, or any of a number of combinations of these and other professionals. The process may begin with market requirements and an analysis of what the user is expected to accomplish. The AIGA community's traditional turf is graphic communication, which of necessity has also become interactive design. Designing the user experience may start with the analysis of the client's identity and market strategy, branding concerns, and marketability.Issues explored in this panel include:• where does design start?• how do you determine the success of a design?• do accepted design methods exist, and how do you determine which to use for a given context?• how are users involved in the design process?
