Design of a tunable omnidirectional circularly polarized antenna based on VO 2

Abstract: In this article, a VO 2 -based tunable omnidirectional circularly polarized (CP) antenna is designed. The proposed antenna combines copper and metamaterial VO 2 . By utilizing the characteristics of insulator-metal phase transition of VO 2 , we can change the length of the resonant branches to achieve tunable working bandwidth. The proposed antenna is composed of a modified floor loaded with VO 2 and copper resonant branches, a top patch with slits, and 14 shorting vias connecting the top path and bottom floor… Show more

“…[80] Utilization of these properties has shown improvement and the advancement of sensors, optical components, antennas, and even imaging systems. [79,[81][82][83][84] Metamaterials use non-naturally occurring material properties that are designed using subwavelength scale patterns on naturally occurring materials. [80] These subwavelength patterns can be arrayed in two or three dimensions to produce a variety of properties.…”

“…During the past years, many OCP antennas were investigated 6–16 . The majority of OCP antennas can be realized using a combination of two orthogonal linearly polarized components with 90 degrees phase difference 6–11 .…”

“…The geometries in 8–11 adopt monopolar wire or patch for generating a vertically polarized electric field and a carefully designed quasi‐loop antenna for horizontally polarized electric field. In addition, in Reference [12], a novel design using metamaterial VO 2 to achieve a dual‐band OCP antenna was proposed. When the value of temperature changes with seasons, the operating band can be switched.…”

“…This method may show a disadvantage in that a single resonant mode supports only a single operation bandwidth, the thickness of the substrate is thick and the bandwidth is relatively narrow. And to overcome the narrow bandwidth issues, a design method of adding a slit and through-hole vias on the radiator [ 7 , 10 , 31 , 32 , 33 ], stacking multi-layered substrates for multiple resonance modes [ 9 ] and adding stubs in same substrate layer for degenerated mode with adjunct frequency with 90-degree phase delay [ 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 ]. Unfortunately, these technologies can have improved bandwidth, but the thickness of the antenna dielectric substrate is still thick, and the design method is complicated.…”
