Design thinking, lean startup, and high‐technology marketing for human‐centered systems engineering

Abstract: The use of design thinking, lean startup, and high‐technology marketing in systems engineering is presented as a case study. All were used and evaluated for their potential to improve systems engineering processes and design, address the challenges of culture change, increase the adoption rate of new technology, and engage with potential users and sponsors more effectively. Multiple examples of training and use on a Model‐Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) initiative at a large government agency showcase how the… Show more

“…The outcomes of the workshops and discussions by all groups were used to inform the development of a digital transformation vision for the enterprise project. Benefits of design thinking have also been observed in a recent case study (Weiland & Knizhnik, 2022) that applied design thinking for human-centered engineering and found significant benefit. These authors point out several limitations and considerations of design thinking.…”

“…Two other literature sources, from 2021 and 2022, consider, from a theoretical point of view, the possible application of design thinking in the innovation and development of software and systems. They point out that "design thinking is a way of thinking that is suitable in situations involving innovation, uncertainty, and changes within organizations" [11]-situations that regularly appear during the creation and implementation of new software. Finally, three literature sources, one older and two recent contain a critical review of design thinking.…”

“…Combining Agile and Lean methods supports APT's main goal to reduce the time needed to deliver on an enterprise-project, by implementing constant communication, continuous tests, and early integration which are the main characteristics of this methodology. This approach ensures that our Agile-Lean teams deliver a version of the product regularly (in either one or two iterations), revise, refocused, and commit new pertinent work at the Program Increment (PI) planning meeting (Weiland & Knizhnik 2022).…”
