Designing the buffer zone of a nature reserve: a case study in Yancheng Biosphere Reserve, China

Abstract: The problems existing in design of buer zones are analyzed, and a procedure for designing the buer zone of reserves is proposed. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is applied to design the width of buer zone. The dierent importance of in¯uences in dierent sections around the reserve leads to dierent widths of buer zone being designated around the reserve. The method is illustrated by a case study, designing the buer zone for the Yancheng Biosphere Reserve, China. #

“…In situ conservation outside the protected areas is a strategy to overcome the limitations of the system (Brandon et al 1998;Glowka et al 1994;Soares et al 2004). Problems in management of the protected areas frequently derive from the lack or inefficiency management proposals for their surroundings (Li et al 2009). These peripheral areas are denoted as Buffer zones (BZ) and they are settled to take in consideration the objectives of protected areas (Oldfield 1988;Milano 1991).…”

“…According to Li et al (1999) buffer zones should be established not only on firm conservation strategies, but must also consider the local human populations. These authors proposed a method for establishing buffer zone for the Yancheng Biosphere Reserve in China that would take into consideration current uses of the area by resident populations, tourism-use values, the environmental quality sought, as well as physical access to the reserve.…”
