Creativity is a key driver of innovation and social progress. Research on creativity has identified a variety of factors that affect creativity at both individual and group levels. However, the causal role of these factors in creativity has not been fully investigated. Thus, the present study examined whether affective voice tone has a causal effect on dyadic creativity. Pairs of participants took part in an experiment in which they cooperated on a verbal creativity task via a video conferencing system that modulated affective voice tone. The results showed that affective voice tone modulation, regardless of its valence polarity (i.e., happy or sad), significantly suppressed the beneficial effects of personality heterogeneity on dyadic creativity. This suggests that vocal expression of emotions in brainstorming, especially in dyads with different personalities, impairs collaborative creative performance. This is the first empirical evidence for an interactive effect of affective voice tone and personality heterogeneity on dyadic creativity in a brainstorming-type situation. Although more comprehensive investigations are needed, evidence from intervention studies such as this one may provide new insights for mechanisms/systems to promote co-creation both between humans and between humans and artificial intelligence agents.

Recent developments in prompt-based generative AI has given rise to discourse surrounding the perceived ethical concerns, economic implications, and consequences for the future of cultural production. As generative imagery becomes pervasive in mainstream society, dominated primarily by emerging industry leaders, we encourage that the role of the CHI community be one of inquiry; to investigate the numerous ways in which generative AI has the potential to, and already is, augmenting human creativity. In this paper, we conducted a diffractive analysis exploring the potential role of prompt-based interfaces in artists' creative practice. Generative AI systems have been heralded as tools for augmenting human creativity and inspiring divergent thinking, though with little empirical evidence for these claims. This paper explores the effects of exposure to AI-generated images on measures of design fixation and divergent thinking in a visual ideation task. Through a between-participants experiment (N=60), we found that support from an AI image generator during ideation leads to higher fixation on an initial example. Participants who used AI produced fewer ideas, with less variety and lower originality compared to a baseline. Our qualitative analysis suggests that the effectiveness of co-ideation with AI rests on participants' chosen approach to prompt creation and on the strategies used by participants to generate ideas in response to the AI's suggestions. We discuss opportunities for designing generative AI systems for ideation support and incorporating these AI tools into ideation workflows.
