Detecting Fake-Good and Fake-Bad MMPI-2 Profiles

Abstract: This study examined the extent to which the validity scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) could identify subjects who were faking bad or faking good and differentiate between psychiatric patients and normal subjects who were faking bad. Subjects were 106 undergraduate college students and 50 psychiatric patients. Results indicate that the mean profiles and optimal cutoff scores resembled those previously reported for the original MMPI. Accurate identification of persons who were… Show more

“…Using this criteria on his samples, he found the classification indices (Sensitivity ϭ .88, Specificity ϭ .81, Positive Predictive Power ϭ .82, Negative Predictive Power ϭ .87) to be satisfactory. These classification rates are comparable, if not superior, to the classification rates reported for the L and K scales on the MMPI-2 by Graham, Watts, and Timbrook (1991). Thus, the results of the present analysis provide further support that a PIM raw score of 18 or greater is highly suggestive of an SDR set.…”

“…A number of studies have been proposed in the recent literature [3], [4] to contrast this problem. However, all the existing proposals require a strong effort of analysis done centrally by the social network provider, which takes into account all the behavioral and topological information of the profiles.…”

“…Nel caso specifico del MMPI-2, la forma di chiusura più marcata è definita faking good (9), letteralmente "apparire buoni". Si tratta di un comportamento distorsivo (10), definito anche "profilo dissimulatorio" (11) in cui le scale L e K (due tra le scale di Validità del test) hanno entrambe un punteggio T≥70 ed F (un'altra scala di Validità) un punteggio T<50.…”
