Detection and Attribution of Changes in Terrestrial Water Storage across China: Climate Change versus Vegetation Greening

Abstract: Whether or not large-scale vegetation restoration will lead to a decrease in regional terrestrial water storage is a controversial topic. This study employed the Geodetector model, in conjunction with observed and satellite hydro-meteorological data, to detect the changes in terrestrial water storage anomaly (TWSA) and to identify the contributions of climate change and vegetation greening across China during the years 1982–2019. The results revealed that: (1) during the period of 1982–2019, TWSA showed a down… Show more

“…The initial NDVI indicates the baseline vegetation coverage and its health and serves as a primary factor affecting water uptake by roots and surface water retention through evapotranspiration [40]. The NDVI trend captures the long-term changes in vegetation cover, reflecting the resilience of vegetation to climatic variations and its cumulative effect on water storage [41,42]. The precipitation trend significantly influences the storage and recharge rates of soil moisture and groundwater [43].…”

“…China boasts a vast area spanning approximately 9.6 million km 2 and is located at 3.86 N-53.55 N, 73.66 E-135.05 E. Due to China's expansive terrestrial ecosystem, which extends across multiple climatic zones, significant spatial differences in climate can be observed (Hao et al,7 of 36 7 2021). The distribution of temperature and precipitation in China varies both spatially and temporally, exhibiting an uneven pattern that generally decreases from southeast to northwest (Kong et al, 2023). Based on the division of river basins, China can be categorized into nine major river basins (Fig.…”
