Detection and Classification of Human Body Odor Using an Electronic Nose

Abstract: An electronic nose (E-nose) has been designed and equipped with software that can detect and classify human armpit body odor. An array of metal oxide sensors was used for detecting volatile organic compounds. The measurement circuit employs a voltage divider resistor to measure the sensitivity of each sensor. This E-nose was controlled by in-house developed software through a portable USB data acquisition card with a principle component analysis (PCA) algorithm implemented for pattern recognition and classific… Show more

“…Recently, evaluation of body odor strength based on isovaleric acid solutions as prepared according to the intensity scale can also be performed using gas sensor array in stead of the www.intechopen.com human nose (Wongchoosuk et al, 2009a). The response of a gas sensor array to the isovaleric acid is displayed in Fig.…”

“…Electronic noses have been used to identify human beings from their body odor [74]. Although individuality in body odors has been described in a variety of mammals [75], the electronic noses which have been designed so far for animal studies mainly focus on purposes other than identification, such as controlling gas level around farms.…”
