Detection of a putative novel genotype of Ehrlichia sp. from opossums (Didelphis aurita) from Brazil

Abstract: Erlichiosis affects humans and animals worldwide. Its distribution and prevalence depends on the presence of tick vectors and hosts in one geographic area. The aim of the present study was to investigate the occurrence of Ehrlichia spp. and Anaplasma spp. in opossums (Didelphis sp.) from the State of Rio de Janeiro, southeast Brazil. Blood samples from 37 animals were tested for these two pathogens using molecular methods. One animal (2.7%) was positive for Ehrlichia sp. by 16S rRNA-based nested PCR. In a phyl… Show more

“…Although different TBP have been described infecting Didelphis sp. [ 5 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 19 , 23 , 24 ], information on hemoplasmas and TBP on D. aurita still are scarce. In addition, the impact that these microorganisms may have on the health of affected individuals as well as the possible changes on hematological and biochemical profile remain unknown.…”

“…In Brazil, several genotypes of A. phagocytophilum , A. marginale , A. bovis , A. platys , E. canis , E. chafeensis , and potential new species, that are not yet named, have been detected in different species of wild animals, including deer 5 11 , wild canids 12 14 , wild felids 12 , 15 , 16 , coatis 14 , rodents 14 , 17 19 , caititus and peccaries 20 , opossums 21 , 22 , and birds 23 , 24 .…”

“…and Anaplasma spp. in wild carnivores (André, 2018;André et al, 2010André et al, , 2012, deer (Sacchi et al, 2012), wild rodents (Benevenute et al, 2017), opossums (Guimarães et al, 2019) and Xenarthra mammals (Calchi et al, 2020) indicates a great diversity of Anaplasmataceae agents circulating in wild mammals. On this pattern, screening wild animals for Anaplasmataceae agents, especially those that are closely…”
