Detection of Apical Inflammatory Root Resorption Associated with Periapical Lesion Using Different Methods

Abstract: The aim of this study was to detect apical inflammatory root resorption (AIRR) associated with periapical lesion using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). This clinical study evaluated AIRR in 88 root apexes, from 52 permanent teeth of 14 patients, extracted for different reasons. The patients were submitted to a clinical interview, review of dental/medical histories and clinical/imaging examinations for treatment planning. All selected teeth showed unrestorable condi… Show more

“…A infecção do canal radicular após a necrose pulpar segue um percurso em sentindo apical, capaz de induzir a inflamação periapical, este processo pode levar a destruição dos tecidos periapicais e induzir a reabsorção e perda radicular. A perda dessas estruturas ocorre devido a atividades das células de defesa em eliminar os microrganismos que estão infectando a polpa, sendo assim a peripodontite periapical é a resposta imune do hospedeiro contra os microrganismos vindos do canal radicular (6).…”

“…Root canal infection follows a natural route in apical direction inducing infl ammation of periapical structures. 1 This infl ammation can stimulate the destruction of periapical tissues as well as loss of radicular tooth structure leading to apical root resorption. Conservative treatment goal in infl ammatory apical root resorption is to eradicate bacteria with non-surgical root canal therapy (NSRT) to allow healing of peri-radicular tissues thus arresting the resorption process.…”

“…Some works have focused on the microstructural damage of the apical foramen and the restricted periforaminal area around it caused by the action of chronic apical periodontitis. Recently, other techniques have been introduced such as cone beam computed tomography, but for extracted teeth microscopic analysis remains a reference standard to identify apical inflammatory root resorption (Estrela et al, 2014).
