Detection of JC Virus Type 1 in Peripheral Lymphocytes, Brain and Cerebrospinal Fluid from Two Korean AIDS Patients with Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy

Abstract: The human polyomavirus JC virus (JCV) is the etiologic agent of the fatal demyelinating central nervous system disease progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), which occurs in 4–7% of AIDS patients. Two Korean AIDS patients with PML were assayed for JCV, and the virus was genotyped by polymerase chain reaction, DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. Using immunohistochemical analysis, we also examined the distribution of JCV antigen in the brains of the patients. The JCV genome was detected in peri… Show more

“…However, since the three Korean JCV isolates belonged to Jpn type 1 subcluster detected in Japan rather than type 1A and B substrains which are detected in Europe and the United States Ault and Stoner, 1992;Guo et al, 1996;Agostini et al, 1998;Sugimoto et al, 2002], probably, the type 1 isolates found in modern Koreans were not transmitted recently from Europeans or European-Americans. The results of previous studies Jeong et al, 2002;Sugimoto et al, 2002] corroborate the findings in this study that indicate that type 1 has long persisted in a minor group of the Korean population compared to CY and type 2A.…”

“…Interestingly, the type1 genotype was found in the Korean population, although type1 was not detected in the most Asian groups other than Japan. In our previous study, the JCV genotype of two Korean PML patients with AIDS was type 1 [Jeong et al, 2002]. In other studies, only one JCV DNA was classified as type 1 based upon RFLP and DNA sequencing analysis [Guo et al, 1996;Sugimoto et al, 1997].…”
