We aimed to estimate the population prevalence of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in an urban community of German third graders (age range 7.3-12.4 yrs) and the diagnostic test accuracy of two OSA screening methods.Using a cross-sectional study design with a multi-stage sampling strategy, 27 out of 59 primary schools within the city limits of Hanover, Germany, were selected. 1,144 third graders were screened for symptoms and signs of OSA using questionnaires and nocturnal home pulse oximetry. 183 children underwent abbreviated nocturnal home polysomnography (OSA definition: apnoea/hypopnoea index o1) and 22 were diagnosed to suffer from OSA.In general, sensitivity for both screening methods was low (,0.6), while specificity was moderately high (mostly .0.7). Independent predictors for OSA were body mass index, history of allergy, a composite questionnaire score, and two oximetry-based criteria. Based on these variables and logistic regression, a prediction model (accuracy; 95% confidence interval: 0.86; 0.71-0.94) was constructed and applied to children who had not successfully undergone polysomnography. This resulted in nine additional OSA cases and an overall design-adjusted population prevalence (95% confidence interval) of 2.8% (1.5-4.1%).Clinical and oximetry findings may be helpful for screening and predicting OSA in primary school children.

Objective:Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) associated health problems are undiagnosed due to the expensive and realistic limitations of overnight PSG examination. In this research, an accurate and resource-efficient biometric index is proposed for remote monitoring of the OSA patients having universal property at all body postures. Methods:In this study, the analysis of 44 subjects determines that the Heart Rate Variability (HRV) parameters including time and frequency domains such as ratio of Standard Deviation of NN interval (SDNN) and Root-Mean-Squared of the Successive Differences (RMSSD), termed as SRR; and LHR (ratio between normalized Low to High-Frequency power) can be taken into consideration to develop reasonable accurate and cost-efficient indexes for OSA levels measurement.

Background: This prospective study was conducted in our department with the objective to study the quality of life outcome after adenotonsillectomy in children with sleep disorderd breathing. Sleep-disordered breathing, can lead to substantial morbidities, affecting the central nervous system (CNS), the cardiovascular and metabolic systems, and somatic growth, ultimately leading to reduced quality of life. Methods: This prospective study was conducted in 47 patients in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Government Medical College and associated SMHS Hospital Srinagar. The study was included the patients with SDB in pediatric age group, who visited in our OPD.OSA-18 questionnaire was used pre-operatively, at 2 and 6 months after surgery. Results: Our study groups comprised of total 47 patients with majority of patients with in age group of 5-7 years, males were 29 (61.70%) and females were 18 (38.30%). In our study the OSA 18 scale used pre-operatively showed majority of patients 33 (70.21%) having score >80 score, with mean OSA-18 score of 84.15 showing that there was a major impact on quality of life and there was significant improvement in mean OSA-18 score in postoperative period from 30.49 to 26.85 at 2 and 6 months post- operatively and hence improvement in quality of life. Conclusions: Based on the observation made in the study we concluded that there was a significant improvement in the disease specific postoperative quality of life after both adenotonsillectomy and tonsillectomy. We also concluded that polysomnography results matched with OSA 18 questionnaire scale score done preoperatively.

Abstract: The ability to correctly identify 12 out of 14 cases of OSA (with the 2 false negatives arising from subjects with an apnea-hypopnea index less than 10) indicates that the automated apnea classification system outlined may have clinical utility in pediatric patients.
