Detection of Pulmonary Emboli With CT Angiography at Reduced Radiation Exposure and Contrast Material Volume

Abstract: Detection rate and diagnostic confidence for the presence of pulmonary emboli with low-dose pulmonary CTA using 80 kVp and reduced iodine delivery rate may be equal to that at 120 kVp in patients weighing less than 100 kg.

“…Additional prospective studies with larger patient cohorts with PE are required to verify the results of our study. Third, we chose CTPA evaluated by two readers as the reference standard for diagnostic accuracy similar to previous studies (18,23). We acknowledge that although CTPA is the most common method to diagnose PE in clinical routine, CTDIvol, volume CT dose index; DLP, dose-length product; ED, effective dose.…”

“…During this final session, the radiologists were allowed to obtain the clinical history of the patients and the results of supplementary imaging applications. The final results were regarded as the reference standard to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the blinded assessment by each individual observer (23,24).…”

“…In previous publications, the adjustments of the tube currentetime product for low tube voltage CT angiography protocols have been performed manually, mainly based on empirical judgments by the authors. 1,2,4 Despite various promising publications, radiologists have been hesitant to apply low tube voltages in CT angiography, mainly due to the challenging interaction of the tube voltage with the image contrast and noise and the timeconsuming adjustment of the tube currentetime product. However, the recent invention of an automatic tube voltage selection technique holds the potential to overcome these problems.…”
