Detector Control System for the GE1/1 slice test

Abstract: JINST 15 P05023A : Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) technology, in particular triple-GEM, was selected for the upgrade of the CMS endcap muon system following several years of intense effort on R&D. The triple-GEM chambers (GE1/1) are being installed at station 1 during the second long shutdown with the goal of reducing the Level-1 muon trigger rate and improving the tracking performance in the harsh radiation environment foreseen in the future LHC operation [2]. A first installation of a demonstrator system star… Show more

“…The five superchambers were installed in the positions shown in figure 4. Superchambers 27, 28, 29, 30 (Δ𝜙 = 40 • ) in Slot-1 are to measure muon rate, while superchamber 1 (Δ𝜙 = 10 • ) in Slot-2 to test electronics and a new high voltage system [19]. These superchambers are arranged such that when all 72 superchambers are installed they will cover all 2𝜋 of each endcap wheel.…”

“…Figure 6 left shows schematically various components of a single triple-GEM detector used in CMS while figure 6 right shows a Geant4 based image of a superchamber used in this study. The sensitivity is calculated by simulating the detailed detector configuration as described above and is the same used in the CMS slice test [19]. Thresholds used in simulation are summarized in table 4.…”

“…With the aim of gaining operational experience and demonstrating the integration of the GE1/1 system into the trigger, five superchambers (a combination of two single trapezoidal shape triple-GEM detector) were installed as an exercise known as GE1/1 Slice Test [7]. The background data for one of the superchambers (chamber 28 layer-2) was analyzed and hit rate as a function of perpendicular distance R from beam-line was obtained using the zero-bias data [8].…”

“…The integration with the CMS DAQ system was only available for the VFAT2 detectors. The electronics chain for the VFAT2 has been previously described along with the detector control system [7].…”

“…Preparation for the utilization of GE1/1 began with the insertion of demonstrator super chambers during the 2016 year end technical shutdown (YETS) [7]. Four super chambers were installed using preliminary front end electronics system and were fully integrated into the CMS data acquisition chain (DAQ).…”
