Detector for the FSD Fourier-diffractometer Based on ZnS(Ag)/ 6 LiF Scintillation Screen and Wavelength Shifting Fiber Readout

Abstract: At the IBR-2 pulsed reactor (FLNP, JINR, Dubna), a specialized time-of-flight instrument, the Fourier-Stress-Diffractometer (FSD), is under construction. This instrument is intended for the measurement of internal stresses in bulk samples by using high-resolution neutron diffraction. One of the main components of the diffractometer is a new-type of detector with combined electronic-geometric focusing, uniting a large solid angle and a small geometric contribution to the instrumental resolution. The first two m… Show more

“…The main drawback of the ZnS(Ag) phosphor has been its long decay time (~10 −5 s) [139][140][141]. However, ZnS:Ag,Cl can be used to detect thermal neutron if a lithium compound enriched with 6 Li is incorporated [142].…”

“…Two reasons make this approach feasible. First, the ZnS: 6 LiF scintillator is relatively slow [8] and consequently the photons are sufficiently spaced in time to allow the detection of almost each individual photon emitted in a given time window. Secondly, SiPMs have an excellent single photon counting capability.…”

“…The BS detector is assembled from 16 6 Li-based elements, which are spatially arranged according to the TOF focusing condition (Figure 6b). Each ASTRA detector includes seven independent TOF focused ZnS(Ag) elements, i.e., with independent outputs of electronic signals of elements [29]. The combined use of electronic and TOF focusing of the scattered neutron beam allows researchers to increase the solid angle up to~0.16 sr for each ASTRA detector.…”
