The productivity of cattle farms is affected by infectious and noninfectious factors that generate economic losses and cause reproductive failure represented by low conception rates, embryonic mortality, abortions, and fetal mummification. The infectious agents that most impact the reproductive health of the bovine species from conception to birth are bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BoHV-1) causing infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), bovine parainfluenza virus type 3 (PI3), Neospora caninum and Leptospira spp. The objective of this study was to diagnose the presence of BoHV-1, bovine viral diarrhea (BVD), PI3, Neospora caninum, and Leptospira spp. by serology and identify the risk factors associated with infectious agents of reproductive interest in bovines of Boyacá (Colombia). A descriptive cross-sectional study was developed, with simple random sampling, where a sample size of 601 female cattle of Holstein, Jersey, and Normande breeds of different age groups was determined. Blood samples were taken and processed using the indirect ELISA technique (SYNBIOTICS®, SERELISA® BVD p80 Ab Mono Blocking, Ingezim R.12.NC.K, PRIMACHECK VPI-3®) and the MAT test for the diagnosis of bovine leptospirosis. The data were processed with the statistical program Epi Info™. The highest apparent seroprevalence was established for infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (61.1%), followed by BVD (37.6%), PI3 (40.9%), neosporosis (51.1%), and leptospirosis (14.8%). Variables such as age >4 years and Holstein breed for IBR and >4 years for BVD were established risk factors. Considering our results, we suggest implementing prevention and control plans that include vaccination as a prophylactic measure and biosecurity tools that reduce the probability of contagion and transmission of pathogens.

La leptospirosis es una enfermedad transmitida de animales a humanos, provocada por especies patógenas de Leptospira spp. Este microorganismo sobrevive en el ambiente varias semanas tanto en agua como en el suelo. Además de esto, los reservorios principales son los roedores, caninos, porcinos y bovinos. Los brotes son frecuentes en países tropicales y subtropicales. El objetivo inicial es identificar los factores de riesgo de leptospirosis y los métodos diagnósticos por medio de una revisión narrativa. Se realizó una búsqueda de la literatura de artículos en español y en las bases de datos Google Scholar, Lilacs, Redalyc, Medigraphic, Scielo, ProQuest, Publimed y ScienceDirect, entre 2016 y 2021, haciendo uso de palabras clave como leptospirosis, factores de riesgo, diagnóstico, epidemiología y zoonosis. Teniendo en cuenta la revisión narrativa de la literatura en los 50 artículos consultados se puede determinar que los trabajadores con mayor predisposición a contagio de leptospirosis son los agricultores, trabajadores de mataderos, piscícolas, recolectores de basura, veterinarios auxiliares, ordeñadores de granja, industria pecuaria. Dentro los factores determinantes se encontró el uso inapropiado de elementos de protección personal (EPP), desconocimiento de la enfermedad, consumo de aguas contaminadas, comer en plantas de sacrificio, entre otros. Una de las conclusiones es que se identificó la similitud en los diferentes artículos consultados en cuanto al contagio, que se presenta más en hombres que en mujeres debido a las diferentes prácticas que realizan, también se evidenció que la zona rural tiene poca atención médica y representa un alto índice de transmisión de leptospirosis.

One of the limiting factors of productive efficiency in cattle and buffalo herds is related to the high prevalence of infectious diseases which affect reproduction. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of anti-Leptospira antibodies for bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BoHV-1) in bovine and buffalo herds in Colombia. Blood serum samples were collected from 1100 buffaloes and 1000 cattle. The ELISA technique was used to detect antibodies against BVDV and BoHV-1, and the microscopic agglutination technique to detect anti-Leptospira antibodies. The prevalence of anti-Leptospira antibodies and of BVDV and BoHV-1 in bovine samples was observed in 16, 39.7, and 65% of animals, respectively, while the positivity in samples for the same antibodies in buffalos was detected in 18.7, 27.5 and 51.5%, respectively. Exposure of cattle and buffaloes to BoHV-1 was positively associated with age, higher prevalence rates were observed in older ages. Seropositivity of cattle for BVDV and BoHV-1 was higher in male animals. Activities such as embryo transfer, milking, and needle reuses, as well as the presence of cats and rodents are factors which favor positivity of the herd for BVDV and BoHV-1.
