Determinants and impact of local institutions for common resource management

Abstract: ABSTRACT. In this article, local institutions for forest conservation and management are analysed. The discussion is based on data from 37 villages and 180 households randomly sampled from a protected area in Rajasthan, India. Local management institutions are described, factors affecting inter-village differences in management institutions and collective action are analysed in a logit model, and the impact of institutions and other variables on common resource dependency and forest outcomes is tested using in… Show more

“…These dimensions might be different for other CPNRs, such as pastures or grasslands, and water resources (drinking water, irrigation water or water for livestock). In addition to the studies by Cavendish (2000) and Angelsen and Wunder (2003), Heltberg (2001) mentions the presence of local institutions. He argues that local institutions managing CPNRs contribute positively to the conservation of CPNRs, but their impacts are often insufficient to safeguard CPNRs from further environmental degradation.…”

“…The soils are predominantly shallow sands of the siallitic group derived from sandstone (Nyamapfene, 1991 (Heltberg, 2001). Wade (1988), Ostrom (1990) and Baland and Platteau (1996) suggested favorable conditions for sustainable governance of common pool resources.…”

“…Except for select cases like Nepal, where communities opt into a formal, legal community forestry CA program, CA should therefore be analyzed as a multi-faceted continuum rather than a binomial variable where households do or do not participate (Jodha, 2008;Shyamsundar, 2008;Agarwal, 2010;Bluffstone et al, 2008). This approach represents an important extension of past literature (Edmonds 2002;Heltberg 2001) that viewed CA as dichotomous.…”
