A new lupin from Valencia (Spain) has been described recently. The new species Lupinus mariae-josephi H. Pascual (Fabaceae) differs from any other Mediterranean and North American taxon in banner position, flower colour and inflorescence structure. This species was found in a calcareous area, and when it was grown in experimental fields it has always performed better in alkaline soils. This work attempts to establish the content of protein, oil and nutritionally active factors (alkaloids, α-galactosides and inositol phosphates) in this new species of lupin, to investigate differences with other Lupinus ssp. The analysed raw seed samples of this new species showed a total protein content of 329.4 g kg -1 and oil content of 54.0 g kg -1 . The total content of alkaloids, α-galactosides and phytate was similar to other bitter Lupinus species being lupanine, stachyose and myo-inositol hexaphosphate (IP 6 ) the main bioactive compounds. However, the profile of alkaloids and proteins, which is an important chemotaxonomic criterion, was characteristic of this species. It is worth to notice that this Lupinus is able to grow in calcareous soils what makes this species very promising for soil recovery.Additional keywords: alkaloids; fatty acids; lupin; phytate; protein pattern; α-galactosides. ResumenComposición química de una nueva especie de Lupinus encontrada en España: Lupinus mariae-josephi H. Pascual (Fabaceae) Recientemente se ha descrito una nueva especie de Lupinus en Valencia (España). Esta nueva especie, Lupinus mariae-josephi H. Pascual (Fabaceae) difiere de otras especies de Lupinus del área mediterránea o de Norteamérica en la posición del estandarte, el color de la flor y la estructura de la inflorescencia. Fue encontrada en un área calcárea, y en estos últimos años, cuando se ha cultivado, ha crecido en suelos calizos. El objetivo de este trabajo ha sido estudiar el contenido de proteína, grasa y factores nutricionalmente activos (alcaloides, α-galactósidos y fitatos) en esta nueva especie, para ver las diferencias que existen con otras especies de Lupinus. Los resultados han mostrado un contenido en proteína de 329,4 g kg -1 y un contenido en grasa de 54,0 g kg -1 . El contenido total de alcaloides, α-galactósidos y fitatos fue similar a otras especies amargas de Lupinus siendo la lupanina, la estaquiosa y el mioinositol hexafosfato (IP 6 ) los principales componentes bioactivos. Sin embargo, el perfil de alcaloides y el perfil proteico, que son un importante criterio taxonómico, fueron característicos de esta especie. Es importante resaltar que esta especie de Lupinus es capaz de crecer en suelos calizos, lo que la hace muy prometedora para la recuperación de suelos.

competition of feedstock proteins produced mainly in North and South America; the increased use of chemical fertilizers in crop production; the availability of cheap sources of animal protein (fish and meat-beef, pork and poultry), and the simplification of agricultural systems. In fact, during the last decades the cultivation of grain legumes in Europe, as well as their use, fell sharply: in 2010 the total production of pulses in Europe was 39% of that obtained in 1990 (FAO Stat: http://faostat3.fao.org/home/index.html). As a consequence, Europe presently needs to import most of the RESEARCH ARTICLE OPEN ACCESS AbstractThe current European protein deficit is estimated as high as 70% of present needs. Because of the high protein content of their seeds, grain legumes are attractive candidates for lowering the deficiency in plant protein production. The objective of this work was to identify new sources of vegetable protein that would reduce our high dependence of soy, the main source of protein in the manufacture of feedstuffs. To achieve this goal, we determined the proximate composition, the bioactive components, as well as the antinutritional factors present in the studied seeds. In general, the protein, fat and carbohydrates content of legume seeds studied were within the limits found in the literature. The bioactive compounds detected in all the seeds were α-galactosides, myoinositol phosphates, protease inhibitors and phenols. IP 6 (phytic acid) was the main inositol phosphate form in all the samples. The highest protease inhibitors content was detected in both Lathyrus cicera cultivars. Vicia ervilia and L. cicera cultivars showed low haemagglutinating activity (20.4 HU/g). The γ-glutamyl-S-ethenyl-cysteine content in Vicia narbonensis was around 16.0 mg/g. Both L. cicera varieties presented similar β-Noxalyl-L-α, β-diaminopropionic acid content (0.80 mg/g). The two V. ervilia varieties showed high canavanine concentration (1.93-5.28 mg/g). Vicine was only detected in V. narbonensis cultivars (0.3 mg/g). The plant, jatropha has attracted worldwide attention for its high oil content. The use of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to separate and quantify, for the first time, the phytic acid (inositol hexaphosphate) and lower inositol phosphates (tri-, tetra-and penta-phosphates; IP6, IP5, IP4 and IP3) in toxic and non-toxic (NT) Jatropha curcas seeds from different locations in Mexico was proposed. There are reports on the total phytic acids but the method of precipitation used was not specific to distinguish between the phytic acid (IP6) and its hydrolysis products; therefore, this technique underestimates the IP6 content. It was observed that the total inositol concentration is independent on the presence or absence of phorbolesters (PE). The analysis showed that the toxic seeds from Villaflores and Chiapa de Corzo had high concentrations of total IP (46.2 and 42.5 mg/g, respectively) but the NT seeds from Huitzilan is the highest (56.88 mg/g) followed by Pueblillo (41.427 mg/g), Cuautla (37.832 mg/g) and Xochitlan (35.868 mg/g) showed higher values of IP. Finally, the toxic seeds from Coatzacoalcos (22.5 mg/g) showed lower value. This is the first work showing the different inositol phosphates present in jatropha seed samples, highlighting the presence of hexaphosphate acid as the major component.
