Determination of reference intervals for fluid analysis and cytologic evaluation variables in synovial fluid samples obtained from carpal and tarsal joints in commercial nonlame growing swine

Abstract: OBJECTIVE To determine reference intervals for total nucleated cell count, total protein concentration, pH, RBC count, and percentages of neutrophils, lymphocytes, and large mononuclear cells in synovial fluid samples (SFSs) obtained from the carpal and tarsal joints of healthy swine. ANIMALS 54 healthy commercial finisher pigs that had no evidence of lameness or gross joint swelling. PROCEDURES Each pig was anesthetized, and SFSs were collected from 1 carpal and 1 tarsal joint for fluid analysis, cytologic ev… Show more

“…Synovial fluid was collected according to Canning et al (2018) . Briefly, the same 24 sample pigs described above received an intramuscular injection of tiletamine hydrochloride and zolazepam hydrochloride (4.4 mg/kg), ketamine hydrochloride (2.2 mg/kg), and xylazine hydrochloride (4.4 mg/kg).…”

“…The association in this study between the presence of bacterial DNA and moderate-to-severe osteoarthritis further supports this hypothesis. The yield of synovial fluid cultures in dogs with suspected infectious arthritis is known to be low [29]. Reported sensitivity remains low [15], with false negatives being reported in a significant proportion of cases (20%-50% of dogs, 12%-43% of humans, and 23.7% of horses) with septic arthritis [13].…”

“…Synovial fluid was collected according to methods described by ( Canning et al, 2018 ). Briefly, the same subset of 36 pigs received a single intramuscular injection of tiletamine hydrochloride and zolazepam hydrochloride (4.4 mg/kg), ketamine hydrochloride (2.2 mg/kg), and xylazine hydrochloride (4.4 mg/kg).…”
