Background: Evidence shows the effectiveness of complementary medicine and its use in the treatment of chronic diseases are increasing. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the relationship between knowledge and attitude toward complementary medicine in patients with chronic disease and referred to a hospital in an urban area of Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional correlation study was conducted with 400 patients with chronic diseases referred to a hospital in an urban area of Iran. The samples were chosen using convenience sampling. The patients' knowledge and attitudes were assessed using a researcher-made questionnaire and the holistic complementary and complementary medicine questionnaire, respectively. Results: The patients' knowledge was the highest and lowest in the subscales of herbal medicine and energy therapy, respectively. Also, their attitudes mean regarding holistic health was better than attitude regarding scientific validity of complementary medicine (21.37 versus 15.88). There were statistically significant relationships between knowledge and attitude (r = 0.28, P < 0.001). While the relationship between knowledge regarding complementary medicine and attitude toward holistic health (r = 0.52, P < 0.001), its relationship with attitude toward the scientific validity of complementary medicine was reverse and negative (r = -.23, P < 0.001). Moreover, demographic variables such as the level of education, marital status, disease type, exercise habits, and information about the methods of complementary medicine had statistically significant relationships with the patients' knowledge about complementary medicine. The frequency of consumption of vegetables per week (r = -0.18, P < 0.001) and the duration of disease (r = -0.16, P = 0.002) had a statistically significant reverse relationship with knowledge regarding complementary medicine. Conclusions: Knowledge regarding herbal medicine was high in patients with chronic diseases. Given a lack of sufficient knowledge and poor attitudes about other aspects of complementary medicine, patients need more education about the significance of complementary medicine and its positive effects on their health.

Background: Insomnia is the most common of all sleep complaints and is under-researched. The current treatments of choice are conventional hypnotics agents, but these have potential for serious adverse reactions. Uncontrolled and anecdotal evidence suggests that lavender oil is an effective treatment for insomnia, but this has not been formally investigated.Objectives: The aims of this study were to evaluate the proposed trial methodology and the efficacy of Lavandula augustifolia (lavender) on insomnia.Interventions: Interventions consisted of Lavandula augustifolia (treatment) and sweet almond oil as placebo/control. The aroma was supplied via an Aromastream device (Tisserand Aromatherapy, Sussex, UK).Design: This was a pilot study with randomized, single-blind, cross-over design (baseline, two treatment periods, and a washout period, each of 1 week duration).Subjects and setting: Volunteers with defined insomnia treated on a domiciliary basis participated in the study.Outcome measures: Outcomes were assessed with the following: Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) indicating insomnia (score Ͼ5 at entry); Borkovec and Nau (B&N) Questionnaire evaluating treatment credibility; and Holistic Complementary and Alternative Medicine Questionnaire (HCAMQ) assessing attitudes to CAM and health beliefs.Results: Ten (10) volunteers (5 male and 5 female) were entered and completed the 4 week study. Lavender created an improvement of Ϫ2.5 points in PSQI (p ϭ 0.07, 95% CI Ϫ4.95 to Ϫ0.4). Each intervention was equally credible and belief in CAM did not predict outcome. Women and younger volunteers with a milder insomnia improved more than others. No period or carry-over effect was observed. Conclusion:The methodology for this pilot study appeared to be appropriate. Outcomes favor lavender, and a larger trial is required to draw definitive conclusions.

ÖZGiriş: Araştırma, jinekolojik kanserli hastaların tamamlayıcı ve alternatif tedavi kullanım durumları ve tamamlayıcı ve alternatif tedaviye ilişkin tutumlarını belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Bulgular: Araştırmaya katılan kadınların yaş ortalaması 54.08 ± 12.48 olarak belirlenmiş olup, %45'inin ilkokul mezunu olduğu saptanmıştır. Hastaların %54.5'inin tamamlayıcı ve alternatif tedavi hakkında bilgisi olduğu, % 28.2'sinin şu anda kansere yönelik herhangi bir tamamlayıcı ve alternatif tedavi yöntemi kullandıkları, %61.8'inin en çok bitkisel tedavi ve tıbbi çayları kullandıkları, en çok kullanılan bitkisel yöntemin %29.2 ile adaçayı olduğu saptanmıştır. Kadınların TATKTÖ puan ortalaması 29.61 ± 4.85 olarak dü-şük düzeyde olduğu saptanmıştır.Sonuç: Jinekolojik kanserli kadınların tamamlayıcı alternatif tıp yönteme ilişkin kullanım oranlarının düşük olduğu ancak olumlu tutuma sahip oldukları söylenebilir. Sağlık personellerinin tamamlayıcı ve alternatif tedavinin olası riskleri ve yararları konusunda yeterli bilgi sahibi olmaları ve hastaları doğru şekilde yönlendirmeleri büyük önem taşımaktadır.Anahtar Kelimeler: Kanser, kadın hastalıkları, tamamlayıcı ve alternatif tedavi ABSTRACT Introduction: Research was carried out to determine gynecologic cancer patients' complementary and alternative medicine usage conditions and also their attitudes towards these treatments.
