Developing a pan-European technical standard for a comprehensive high-quality lung cancer computed tomography screening programme: an ERS technical standard

Abstract: Screening for lung cancer with low radiation dose computed tomography (LDCT) has a strong evidence base. The European Council adopted a recommendation in November 2022 that lung cancer screening be implemented using a stepwise approach. The imperative now is to ensure that implementation follows an evidence-based process that delivers clinical and cost effectiveness. This ERS Taskforce was formed to provide a technical standard for a high-quality lung cancer screening program.MethodA collaborative group was co… Show more

“…The median surveillance was 15 months (IQR [13][14][15][16][17]. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, continued follow up was not feasible firstly for those subjects with a baseline LDCT scan clinically not significant and secondly for patients with nodules considered to be low risk.…”

“…Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) is gaining constant traction as a screening tool for lung cancer [8]. International scientific societies have indeed developed protocols for high-risk subgroups (active or former smokers aged 50 years or older) [9][10][11][12][13][14][15]. In the USA, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid services (CMS) has recently announced a national coverage determination that expanded reimbursement for lung cancer LDCT screening to improve health outcomes for people with lung cancer [15].…”

“…Results must also be communicated promptly and effectively among healthcare staff to enable timely management and follow-up of findings. A recent ERS Technical Standard recommends outcomes are communicated within four weeks of the LDCT 60 .…”

“…Early identification and treatment are crucial to improve the prognosis of lung cancer patients. The incidence of pulmonary nodules has been increasing in recent years due in part to the increased use and improved sensitivity of imaging modalities such as chest computed tomography (CT) scans [3]. Biopsy or surgical resection may be necessary to obtain a definitive diagnosis in cases where malignancy is suspected [4].…”
