Vehicular Communication Systems are developing form of networks in which moving vehicles and side road units are the main communicating nodes. In such networks, vehicular nodes provide information to other nodes via Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication protocols. A vehicular communication system can be used to support smart road applications such as accidents and traffic congestion avoidance, collision warning forwarding, forensic accidents assistance, crime site investigation, and alert notification. However, current Vehicular Communication Systems suffer from many issues and challenges, one of which is their poor interoperability as they lack standardization due to the inconsistent technologies and protocols they use. This paper proposes several standard protocols and languages for P2P vehicular networks that are built using heterogeneous technologies and platforms. These standards consist of three protocols: a Standard Communication Protocol which enables the interoperable operation between the heterogeneous nodes of a P2P Vehicular network; an Autonomous Peers Integration Protocol which enables the self-integration and selfdisintegration of functionalities; and a Standard Information Retrieval Protocol which allows the P2P network to be queried using a standard high-level language. In the experiments, a case study was presented as a proof of concept which demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed protocols and that they can be used as a standard platform for data exchange in P2P Vehicular Communication Systems. As future work, Service-oriented architectures for vehicular networks are to be investigated while addressing security issues such as confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Fog-based Vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) are new kinds of network that combine fog computing and mobile ad-hoc networks appeared in recent years, which can be used in monitoring traffic, smart driving, safe driving, and so on. Fog-based VANET is composed of a large number of dynamic nodes and static nodes, which is a heterogeneous network. Due to the heterogeneity of fog-based VANET, there is a large difference in clock rate between different nodes. It makes clock of nodes soon become inconsistent. The inaccurate clocks would lead to problems such as imprecise duty-cycle scheduling and wrong events sequence, etc. Synchronizing the clocks needs multiple message exchanges among the nodes. However, due to the mobility of the fog-based VANET, the network topology changes dynamically, which may cause synchronization packets to fail to be transmitted to a node that needs to be synchronized. In this paper, a precise time synchronization mechanism for fog-based VANET is proposed. The mechanism uses two-way message exchange method to estimate clock offset through analyzing the mobility of dynamic nodes. Clock skew is corrected using a carrier frequency offset (CFO) based hardware clock frequency estimation and considering the Doppler effect. Theoretical analyses and simulation results show that our time synchronization mechanism achieves highly accurate time synchronization. Raspberry Pi-Based Low-Cost Connected Device for Assessing Road Surface Friction

Measuring friction between the tyres of a vehicle and the road, often and on as many locations on the road network as possible, can be a valuable tool for ensuring traffic safety. Rather than by using specialised equipment for sequential measurements, this can be achieved by using several low-cost measuring devices on vehicles that travel on the road network as part of their daily assignments. The presented work proves the hypothesis that a low cost measuring device can be built and can provide measurement results comparable to those obtained from expensive specialised measuring devices. As a proof of concept, two copies of a prototype device, based on the Raspberry Pi single-board computer, have been developed, built and tested. They use accelerometers to measure vehicle braking deceleration and include a global positioning receiver for obtaining the geolocation of each test. They run custom-developed data acquisition software on the Linux operating system and provide automatic measurement data transfer to a server. The operation is controlled by an intuitive user interface consisting of two illuminated physical pushbuttons. The results show that for braking tests and friction coefficient measurements the developed prototypes compare favourably to a widely used professional vehicle performance computer.
