Development and comparative evaluation of integrated solar‐driven off‐grid energy systems with hydrogen production and storage options for sustainable buildings

Abstract: This study presents the development of a new solar energy‐based integrated system where hydrogen production, storage, and power generation and heat storage subsystems are designed in a combined manner to meet the energy demands of multiple buildings in a community. It is also comprehensively analyzed and assessed under various criteria comparatively. A comprehensive study is established for a community with 80 156 residential buildings in Southern Ontario, Canada. Solar‐driven three different cases are investi… Show more

“…Energy storage solutions are gaining more attention as intermittent generation from renewable energy sources increases 7‐12 . Numerous investigations have assessed the requirement for short‐ vs extended‐duration energy storage across various degrees of variable renewable energy (VRE) integration, 13 underscoring the significance of extended‐duration energy storage as VRE penetration on the grid escalates 14‐16 .…”

“…Energy storage solutions are gaining more attention as intermittent generation from renewable energy sources increases. [7][8][9][10][11][12] Numerous investigations have assessed the requirement for short-vs extended-duration energy storage across various degrees of variable renewable energy (VRE) integration, 13 underscoring the significance of extended-duration energy storage as VRE penetration on the grid escalates. [14][15][16] Furthermore, these analyses reveal the necessity for continued advancements and widespread adoption to facilitate the incorporation of extended-duration energy storage solutions, which may not be adequately acknowledged within the prevailing market and policy frameworks.…”
