Studies on the topic are critically reviewed. Focus is set on the problem formulation that allows one getting reliable solutions. The selection of appropriate cost functions and constraints is discussed. Aspects related to dealing with model mismatch are presented. a r t i c l e i n f o t r a c tThe activated sludge process (ASP) is the most commonly used process for wastewater treatment. Improving its performance is necessary from economic and environmental point of views. In this context, dynamic optimization is a powerful tool for assisting engineers in determining optimal operations and designs for ASPs.However, the real optimality of the solution strongly depends on the optimization problem statement, for which unfortunately, there is no standard or commonly accepted formulation. In a hopeful attempt to provide a guideline for future works on the topic, this paper reviews the literature devoted to optimal control and design of ASPs. The main issues to be addressed in order to get reliable solutions are discussed, among which: (1) Managing the inevitable mismatch between the model predictions and the real ASP operation. (2) Dealing with the unpredictable variations in the wastewater characteristics. (3) Accounting for the slowest dynamic processes occurring in ASPs. (4) Appropriately selecting the decision variables and the flowsheet structure in order to simplify the problem formulation from a mathematical perspective. (5) Conveniently choosing the cost functions expressions/correlations. (6) Successfully selecting the mathematical constraints in order to guarantee physically relevant operations.

Petrochemical complexes include high risk interconnected plants processing large quantities of dangerous/flammable substances, complex reactors of high thermal sensitivity operated under severe conditions of high productivity and associated equipment, vessels or separation units operating at intense temperature and pressures. Such plant design/operation problems contribute quite frequently to the occurrence of small incidents or rare major accidents including domino effects. The study applies classical boiling liquid expanding vapour explosion fire and toxic puff release models to evaluate the effects and consequences of different accident scenarios involving two neighbouring risk plants, with exemplifications for the aniline and maleic anhydride synthesis plants. A proposed joint probability index of human casualties, related to thermal radiation doses and toxic material released around plants, points out the influence of production capacity and plant proximity on the severity of accident consequences and domino‐effect occurrence. © 2013 Curtin University of Technology and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A systematic comparison framework for selecting the best retrofitting alternative for a water resource recovery facility (WRRF) is proposed in this work. The procedure is applied comparing different possible plant configurations to retrofit an existent anoxic/oxic (A/O) WRRF (Manresa, Spain) aiming to include enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR). The framework for comparison was built on system analysis using a calibrated IWA ASM2d model. A multicriteria set of performance variables, as the operational and capital expenditures (OPEX and CAPEX, respectively) and robustness tests for measuring how fast the plant configuration refuses external disturbances (like ammonium and phosphate peak loads), were used for comparison. Starting from the existent WRRF, four plant configurations were tested: single A 2 /O (only one anoxic reactor converted to anaerobic), double A 2 /O (two anoxic reactors converted to anaerobic), BARDENPHO, and UCT. The double A 2 /O plant configuration was the most economical and reliable alternative for improving the existent Manresa WRRF capacity and implementing EBPR, since the effluent quality increased 3.8% compared to the current plant configuration. In addition, the double A 2 /O CAPEX was close to €165,000 which was at the same order of the single A 2 /O and lower than the BARDENPHO and UCT alternatives. © 2020 Water Environment Federation • Practitioner points • Four configurations including EBPR were evaluated for retrofitting an A/O WRRF. • A new multicriteria comparison framework was used to select the best configuration. • Up to 13 criteria related to effluent quality, robustness and costs were included. • A single function based on the combination of all the criteria was also evaluated.
