“…Consistent with our previous studies (Shiota et al., ) (Nishizono et al., ), we found significant concordance between the RAPINA and RFFIT results in the Philippines, Thailand and Japan. In terms of the negative predictive value, there remains room for improvement.…”

“…Recently, several alternatives to the RFFIT and FAVN test have been developed to estimate VNA titres (Shiota et al., ) (Ma et al., ) (Wang et al., ) (Batista et al., ) (Madhusudana et al., ). As one of the alternative methods, we recently developed the RAPINA, which is an easy, rapid and inexpensive immunochromatography‐based competitive test using formalin‐fixed virus particles for the detection of RABV G protein‐specific antibodies (Shiota et al., ) (Nishizono et al., ) (Nishizono, ). To determine the performance of the test in comparison with RFFIT in different settings, the kit was distributed to rabies laboratories in Japan, Thailand and Sri Lanka for preliminary evaluation.…”

“…However, the methods used to measure the rabies VNA level, such as virus neutralization assays and ELISA, are inconvenient and require specialized laboratories and equipment, and trained personnel. Recently, we developed a rapid, safe, easy, and inexpensive VNA test for rabies based on a combination of an immunochromatographic technique and a competitive immunoassay with neutralizing monoclonal antibodies (14,15). This semiquantitative test determines within 60 min whether a dog has protective VNA levels, without using a live virus and expensive equipment.…”

“…The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the prepared SE-Lateral flow kits reported were 94.4%, 90%, and 94%, respectively (Ibrahim et al, 2017). Furthermore, Shiota et al (2009) developed a lateral flow test for the detection of antibodies against the rabies virus and reported the sensitivity and specificity of 88.7% and 91.9%, respectively, as compared with ELISA. The prepared LFD did not have the ability to differentiate between the infected and vaccinated animals; the same gave results positive at IgG test line 1.…”
