Development and Performance Evaluation of A Low-Cost Hydraulic-Operated Biomass Briquetting Machine

Abstract: Large quantities of agricultural residues produced in Nigeria can provide an alternative way in meeting her energy demand through briquetting. Biomass briquetting is the process of compacting raw biomass materials (wood, charcoal, crop residues, and animal waste) into standard mini-brick units as solid fuel for improved handling and efficiency. A small scale, 40 bar hydraulic operated piston briquetting machine with a capacity of 120 briquettes per hour was developed. The machine comprised of hydraulic, contro… Show more

“…Another key factor limiting the development of biomass briquette industry is the lack of appropriate technology suitable for developing bio-economies. While attempts have been made at developing low-cost briquetting machines [144,159], they often lack the capacity for commercial-scale production and may not meet the quality requirements for commercial briquettes. Encouraging and supporting the development and transfer of appropriate technologies remain an effective strategy for the rapid development of biomass briquette driven rural bioeconomy.…”

“…Several works have been done to research into biomass briquetting in Nigeria. Recent works, which investigated various aspects of biomass densification and technologies involved, include Jekayinfa et al [132], Ojolo et al [252], Orisaleye et al [133,134,[253][254][255], Orisaleye and Ojolo [256,257], Ojomo et al [258], Dairo et al [259], and Adeleke et al [260]. Abdulkareem et al [261] investigated the combustion characteristics of biomass briquettes while Umar et al [262] investigated the application of briquettes to fish processing.…”

“…Important considerations to drive this include the development and transfer of appropriate solid biofuel technologies, as well as market development. The Nigerian bio-economy can be greatly developed and enhanced with the provision of the right technology, which entails improving the efficiency of the existing local, low-cost solid biofuel production machines [137], and fabricating sophisticated and advanced fuel-making machines that can stand the test of time, and facilitate large-scale production of quality solid biofuels.…”
