Development and performance study of a novel physicochemical composite inhibitor for the prevention of coal gangue spontaneous combustion

Abstract: SummaryTo overcome the short inhibition life of currently available inhibitors, a high polymer nanocomposite inhibitor was developed. The spontaneous combustion characteristics of coal gangue from the Yangquan mining area were studied through proximate analysis, scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM/EDS), and thermogravimetric analysis. As a result, the coal gangue was found to be prone to spontaneous combustion. Temperature‐programmed oxidation experiments showed that the average in… Show more

“…33 To overcome the short inhibition life of currently available inhibitors, a novel physicochemical composite inhibitor for the prevention of coal gangue spontaneous combustion was developed by Huang et al The inhibition effect of the PAM/MMT 3%-Ca(OH) 2 20% composite inhibitor was the best in the study, with an inhibition rate of 83.15%. 34 In summary, the research on coal gangue worldwide in recent years mainly focuses on the mechanisms and characteristics of spontaneous combustion of coal gangue dumps, the detection of fire areas, and the development of treatment materials. 26,35−37 However, case studies on the spontaneous combustion of coal gangue dumps and its environmental remediation remain insufficient.…”

“…Overall, large-scale, high temperature, long duration and serious environmental pollution are relatively obvious characteristics of spontaneous combustion gangue hill [14]. Although traditional treatment methods such as grouting (Wang et al 2019), surface sealing (Zhai et al 2017) and excavation and extinguishing method (Huang et al 2019) have achieved good results, the potential thermal energy resources inside the coal gangue are wasted.…”

“…Coal gangue is a byproduct of coal mining and processing, which is unavoidable due to limitations of the existing technical conditions, and emissions are on the rise . The accumulation and storage of coal gangue occupy a large amount of land area.…”
