Development and utilization of lime‐mud waste as filler for production of green paper

Abstract: In this article, the lime‐mud (LM) as a waste generated in the Kraft pulping process was treated to improve its quality to be utilized again as filler. The final treated LM was characterized by different techniques and compared with the currently used calcium carbonate filler. The laboratory hand sheets were prepared from treated LM and the filler used in the factory with the target filler loads lying in the range 0–10 ash. The effect of filler loads on the physical, optical and mechanical properties of paper … Show more

“…In China, about 50 million tons of paper was produced every year, which means dozens of million tons of lime mud were discharged to the environment. The discharge of such a large amount of lime mud leads to serious environmental aspects including water pollution and land occupation 2 . Therefore, how to recycle the lime mud in environmentally friendly ways is an interesting topic and has drawn lots of researchers’ attentions.…”

“…7 The control of the causticizing step during the kraft pulping process produced precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) of various shapes. 8 Low brightness is the main barrier for using raw lime mud as a papermaking filler. The color of the lime mud is usually dark green and is known to be formed by the interaction between a sulfur compound and aluminosilicate (main component of kaolinite) in the green liquor.…”
