Development and Validation of a Point‐of‐Care‐Ultrasound Image Quality Assessment Tool

Abstract: Objectives-We aimed to develop a standardized scoring tool to measure pointof-care ultrasound (POCUS) image quality and to determine validity evidence for its use to assess lung ultrasound image quality.Methods-The POCUS Image Quality (POCUS IQ) scale was developed by POCUS-trained physicians to assess sonographers' image acquisition skills by evaluating image quality for any POCUS application. The scale was piloted using lung images of healthy standardized patients acquired by three expert sonographers compar… Show more

“…Many prior ultrasound competency tools have been developed, 14–18 but are limited by their ability to assess multiple ultrasound modalities using the same tool, are complex requiring more time and resources to perform, do not include an entrustment component, or are not validated. The UCAT is a promising simple tool that incorporates an entrustment scale, but the results of our study do not support widespread use.…”

“…16 The POCUS IQ score was used as it is one of the few tools available with some validity evidence. 16 The POCUS IQ score was calculated for each day of scanning. The overall POCUS IQ score was calculated using the daily POCUS IQ divided by the total number of days scanned.…”

“…We approached the child on a parent's lap, with the practitioner and probe in front of the child, in order to decrease the child's anxiety. Images were recorded at the first rib interspace above the right hemidiaphragm between the midclavicular and midaxillary lines (lung zone 2 7 ). The pleural line, the brightest white line on the m‐mode tracing, was studied.…”
