Development and Validation of a Risk Score for Age-Related Macular Degeneration: The STARS Questionnaire

Abstract: STARS is a new, simple self-assessed questionnaire showing good discrimination of risk for AMD in two large European samples. It might be used by ophthalmologists in routine clinical practice or as a self-assessment for risk of AMD in the general population.

“…We then defined 2 cutpoints at 5 years in RS-I, in order to classify participants in 3 risk categories (low, intermediate and high). The first threshold was chosen to be highly sensitive (sensitivity closest to 95%) and the second to be highly specific (specificity closest to 95 %) similarly to Delcourt et al 38 Finally, prediction performance was evaluated both internally in RS-I (using crossvalidation) as well as externally in ALIENOR. Discrimination performance was assessed by calculating the area under the receiver operating curve (AUC) for incident advanced AMD while accounting for the competing risk of death.…”

“…Patients completed the STARS questionnaire and a score was derived. 12 As reported by Delcourt et al, 12 the questionnaire was designed to be simple, fast, and easy. The risk factors included age, sex, body mass index, ethnicity, family history of AMD, smoking, personal medical history (systemic hypertension, clinical history of myocardial infarction, hypercholesterolemia), and eye-related parameters (iris color, cataract, refraction).…”

“… 1 , 11 The Simplified Thea Risk Assessment Scale (STARS) is a simple, easy-to-use, self-administered 13-item questionnaire to assess personalized risk for AMD in routine clinical practice. 12 The questionnaire was established through a scoring system derived from a sample of more than 12,000 subjects and validated in more than 6.000, subjects.…”

“…Разработка и валидация опросника STARS (Simplified Théa AMD Risk-Assessment Scale) -упрощенной рискассоциированной шкалы для оценки риска развития ВМД компании Théa -осуществлялась в два этапа [30]. Фактически было выполнено два крупных исследования в Италии и Франции, включавших 12 639 и 6897 пациентов старше 55 лет соответственно.…”
