Development and Validation of a Prediction Model of Perioperative Hypoglycemia Risk in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Undergoing Elective Surgery

Abstract: Aim To develop and validate a prediction model to evaluate the perioperative hypoglycemia risk in hospitalized type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients undergoing elective surgery. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the electronic medical records of 1410 T2DM patients who had been hospitalized and undergone elective surgery. Regression analysis was used to develop a predictive model for perioperative hypoglycemia risk. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and the Hosmer-Lemeshow test were used … Show more

“…The ESCA, developed in 1979 by Kearny and Fleischer based on Orem's self-care theory, is designed to measure a patient's self-care capacity [19] . It focuses on four main factors related to self-care: (1) the motivation of the individual, (2) the situation involving active and passive responses, (3) the individual's knowledge base, and (4) the individual's sense of self-worth [20] .…”

“…Because general anesthesia masks cognitive dysfunction and clinical signs of hypoglycemia such as sweating and tachycardia, severe and prolonged hypoglycemia can have serious brain effects. 13,14 Although hypoglycemia may cause delayed postanesthetic recovery primarily in individuals with a history of poorly controlled diabetes, starvation, or alcohol use, hypoglycemia-related delayed anesthetic recovery has also been reported in nondiabetic patients. Even severe hyperglycemia can prolong the time to wake up from anesthesia.…”
