Development and Validation of a Method for the Determination of 159 Pesticide Residues in Tobacco by Gas Chromatography–Tandem Mass Spectrometry

Abstract: A multiresidue gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) method was developed for the analysis of 159 multiclass pesticides in tobacco. A modified QuEChERS sample preparation technique, based on acetonitrile extraction and toluene dilution, followed by dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) cleanup using primary-secondary amine (PSA) and octadecyl (C18) sorbents, was used for sample treatment. Key performance parameters investigated were linearity, recovery, relative standard deviation (RSD), l… Show more

“…Fan et al developed high-throughput analytical methodology for determination of residues of 653 multiclass pesticides and chemical pollutants in tea [51]. Other multiresidue QuEChERS or QuEChERSbased methods, which allow proper determination and quantification of pesticide contaminant in tobacco [52], fish [53], beeswax [54], coffee beans [55], high oil commodities [56], soybeans and pulses [57], nutraceutical products [58], different fruits and vegetables [59] and more are developed.…”

“…Advances in GCMS instrumentation had been introduced to increase the sensitivity, mass accuracy determination, resolution and the detectability of this technique. LC/MS/MS can be used to simultaneously monitor hundreds of potential contaminants-including those difficult to detect by GC [19] [20]. While the MS/MS detector allows for specific, sensitive detection of the pesticide species, the LC column specifications such as particle size is vital to ensure the highest quality data.…”

“…Compared to the other sample preparation techniques such as LLE and PLE, QuEChERS technique shows not only good recoveries and relative standard deviations (RSDs) values in real samples, but higher and more consistent recoveries of targeted analytes than LLE and PLE [8]. So it has attracted much attention since its report [19][20][21][22]. The conventional QuEChERS technique involves an initial extraction with acetonitrile, followed by extraction/partitioning process with the addition of sodium chloride and anhydrous magnesium sulfate, then the extract is cleaned up by dispersive solid phase extraction with primary secondary amine (PSA) absorbent.…”

“…The conventional QuEChERS technique involves an initial extraction with acetonitrile, followed by extraction/partitioning process with the addition of sodium chloride and anhydrous magnesium sulfate, then the extract is cleaned up by dispersive solid phase extraction with primary secondary amine (PSA) absorbent. In recent years, the QuEChERS technique has been widely applied for the determination of pesticide residues in tobacco with minor modifications [21,22]. However, centrifugation or filtration procedure is essential to separate the absorbents from extract in those reports, which is a little troublesome and tedious [23,24].…”
